An urgent plea has been issued to help Esther the Wonder Pig.
The beloved 650-pound member of the Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter’s family has become extremely ill. While she is currently being treated at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Esther needs immediate, urgent testing that can only be provided at Cornell University Veterinary Hospital in Ithaca, NY.
The problem is that Esther would be required to undergo a 3-week quarantine upon her return to Canada after she receives the tests and treatment that she needs at Cornell.
Esther’s family took to social media including Facebook and Instagram where Esther has 1.5 million followers, to explain their dilemma and the urgent need for help.
“We’ve been told she will be placed in a mandatory quarantine for 3 weeks upon her return to Canada. During that time, we will not be able to visit with her or assist with her daily care. She is livestock, as far as the authorities are concerned, and that’s heartbreaking to us.
There’s a chance she’ll be totally fine with nothing more than rest, but there’s also a chance there’s something more serious going on that we can’t see. We’re being forced to decide if we’re willing to risk not finding out what’s going on, or putting her through the immeasurable stresses of mandated quarantine.”
A petition has been started by Jenkins and Walter who noted that they “are requesting a waiver of the quarantine period required by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for Esther when she returns from Cornell Veterinary School to her home in Canada. This is obviously a special situation, and Esther is a Canadian national treasure.”
Jenkins and Walter originally believed Esther was a miniature pig that would grow to a mere 70 pounds, but soon realized that she was, in fact, not a “mini-pig.”
Already attached to their new pet, which they then determined had once belonged to a factory farm where she potentially could have been slaughtered for food, the men decided to raise her as part of their family.
Esther the Wonder Pig is the founding member of the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary in Campbellville, Ontario and her story has inspired hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
Her book, Esther the Wonder Pig: Changing the World One Heart at a Time, is also a NY Times Bestseller.
People are encouraged to sign the petition requesting that The Honorable Justin Trudeau and Mr. Paul Glover, President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, waive this requirement for Esther, SIGN HERE!
